In Memory of David J. C. Austin: A Visionary Breeder Whose Legacy Will Continue

It is with profound sadness that we join the global floral community in mourning the passing of David J. C. Austin, chairman of David Austin Roses. David passed away at his home in Shropshire, England, surrounded by his family. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, loved ones and everyone at David Austin Roses during this difficult time.

Although David was an internationally respected business leader and rosarian, he was, first and foremost, a gardener. His love for roses guided a lifetime of work defined by humility, modesty, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to beauty.

Carrying a Remarkable Vision Forward

David joined the family business in Albrighton, Shropshire, in 1990, as the English roses created by his father, David C. H. Austin, were gaining recognition around the world.

Over the following three decades, David led the company in a period of growth and transformation. Under his leadership, David Austin Roses evolved from a specialist English nursery into one of the most recognized and admired names in the international rose industry.

Throughout that growth, the company’s purpose remained unchanged: to create exceptionally beautiful and fragrant roses.

“David’s influence on the global cut-rose industry is immeasurable,” said Jose R. Azout, founder and president of Alexandra Farms. “His vision did not simply create extraordinary varieties; it transformed the way the world sees, designs with, and experiences roses. His work will outlive us all.” 

David carried his father’s vision forward with great respect, but he also expanded it in a way that would transform the world of floral design.

At the time, commercial cut roses had largely become closed, static flowers. David believed they could offer something more. He envisioned a cut rose that possessed the layered forms, fragrance and movement of a garden rose while also providing the vase life and performance required by the modern floral industry.

To accomplish this, David led an ambitious 15-year breeding program to establish an entirely new category of roses for the cut-flower market. The resulting varieties were unlike anything the industry had previously experienced.

He created a rose that gradually opens and evolves in the vase with abundant petals, intricate forms, and extraordinary fragrance. Their transformation is part of what characterizes a David Austin garden rose. Through this vision, David did not simply introduce new varieties. He fundamentally changed what a cut rose could be.

A Defining Partnership

Alexandra Farms’ relationship with David Austin Roses began in 2012, when we acquired the license to grow the company’s fresh-cut English garden rose varieties after another Colombian farm ceased production.

By then, our experience cultivating garden roses had deepened considerably. We embraced the opportunity to grow these remarkable flowers and soon began producing nearly the entire catalog of David Austin cut-rose varieties.

The beginning of this partnership became a defining moment in the history of Alexandra Farms.

It was founded on a shared belief that roses could offer more than conventional beauty. They could open, move, release their fragrance, and create an emotional experience unlike any other flower.

David entrusted Alexandra Farms with cultivating these extraordinary varieties in the high-altitude growing conditions of the Colombian Andes. That trust became the foundation of a relationship we have valued deeply for more than a decade.

Together, we helped bring iconic roses such as Juliet, Patience, Constance, Tess, Leonora, Purity, Effie, and many others to floral designers, couples, and flower lovers around the world. For Alexandra Farms, growing these roses has never been simply a commercial endeavor. It has been the privilege of helping carry forward a remarkable creative and botanical vision.

An Influence Beyond Measure, A Legacy That Lives in Every Rose

David’s influence on the global cut-flower industry is difficult to quantify. He challenged the industry to reconsider its expectations of a commercial rose. He demonstrated that performance and vase life did not have to come at the expense of fragrance, character and movement. Through patience, courage, and an uncompromising dedication to beauty, he established a new standard for cut roses and opened a new world of possibilities for breeders, growers, floral designers, and flower lovers.

His legacy extends far beyond the business he led or the varieties he helped bring into the world.
