Scientifically speaking, a garden rose is one hardy enough to survive a winter frost, a rose suited to growing outdoors in a garden, which is where the name comes from. Cold hardiness is one of the traits that make them special, and they’re the blooms that experts and rose lovers call “Old Roses.”

At Alexandra Farms, our definition is really about beauty and character. Unlike standard commercial roses, which are bred mainly for uniformity and long stems, garden roses are grown for their individuality. Their blooms open lush and full, often in old-world forms such as cupped, rosette, or quartered, and each variety carries a personality of its own. No two blooms are ever exactly alike, and that individuality, along with their fragrance and depth of color, is the heart of what makes a garden rose so special.

Until recently, these grew only as garden shrubs, and while you could cut them, most didn’t last well in a vase. That changed in 2005, when Alexandra Farms set out to grow garden roses that pair the shape and scent of an Old Rose with the shelf and vase life a florist needs. We grow them not outdoors but in our greenhouses, where every variety is selected, cultivated, and harvested for life as a cut flower. Today Alexandra Farms is the world’s largest producer of garden roses for the cut-flower market, growing only varieties that meet the standards professional florists require.

We only grow varieties that have at least an 8 to 10-day vase life after being grown, harvested, packaged and shipped under the expert care of our rose-loving team.

Many of our garden roses are fragrant, with scents ranging from fruity to citrus to classic old-rose. You can filter for fragrant varieties, and see each one’s fragrance intensity and notes, in our catalog.

Garden roses reward a little care. Give them a clean vase, fresh water, and a fresh cut on the stems, and keep them away from heat and direct sun. Care and handling differs slightly depending on how the roses will be used, so for full guidance see our Care & Handling page.

Garden roses are capricious and tend to vary in color. The luminosity at our farm changes from week to week, and that ever-changing light draws out different tones in each bloom, so the color may vary slightly among a range of tones. Even garden roses cut from the same bush on the same day can have different shades and tones. Don’t expect them all to be exactly the same. This is their character and part of what makes them special.

Alexandra Farms is a family-owned boutique grower of fresh-cut garden roses, founded in 2005. Our farms are nestled in the fertile savanna of Bogotá, high in the Andes mountains of Colombia.

We’re always grateful that people want to see where our garden roses are grown. Alexandra Farms is a working farm with busy operations and no dedicated on-site host, so we are not able to offer public tours.
